Skate Your Way to Health...

The craze these days seems to be in-line skating. You see everyone doing it, from children to adults in parks and in neighborhoods. In-line skating can give you a great overall workout -- if you’re willing to work and not just skate leisurely. In fact, vigorous and continuous striding can burn about 600 calories per hour. In-line skating is a great substitution for running if you have weak knees but still enjoy speed. Serious skating builds and strengthens muscles in your hips and legs even more than running or cycling. You’ll build strength in your arms, abdomen and back, as well, especially if you swing, pump and get your upper body into it. A good pair of in-line skates is not cheap -- about $200 -- and you’ll probably need a helmet and wrist, elbow and knee pads. But once you’re outfitted, you’ll be ready to roll again and again.

TIP:
Try one of the newer jams or preserves to hit gourmet stores such as Apricot Butter or Mandarin Orange with Almonds and put it on your favorite whole grain bread, bagel or English muffin as a wholesome snack before or after skating.
